Last year, at the Prishtina International Airport “Adem Jashari”, the project “Extension of the Runway” was inaugurated, this project is very important for PIA “Adem Jashari” and ANSP of Kosova, since within this project, there are also many subprojects of advanced air navigation systems.

Within the project of “Runway extension” supported and funded by MI, there are also meteorological projects: Weather Forecasting System; Automatic Weather Observing System – New AWOS; Automatic Weather Observing System – AWOS Upgrade and VOLMET/ATIS, projects that are already in the final stage of implementation.

Automatic Weather Observing System – new AWOS and AWOS Upgrade as well as VOLMET / ATIS come from DTN – American Company and will have a special role in raising the category of operational services.

Among the many sensors, both AWOS Systems also have: Biral BTD-300 Lightning Detection Sensor.

Considering the fact that in the last 20 years we have an average of 33 days of thunderstorms on an annual basis, this detector will increase safety in providing aeronautical services in real time, taking in consideration that in severe weather conditions with convective clouds, lightning’s or thunders: cloud-cloud and cloud-ground will be detected and notified from the responsible personnel, and then this information will be distributed to the aircraft through the Air Traffic Control.
